So You Think You Know Everything About Teens in Social Media?

Social networking sites are great methods of free advertising, but how do you know whom to advertise to? According to a survey from myYearbook and Ketchum, the Internet’s most influential teens are more likely than their peers to actively be a part of social media, digital activities, and constantly spreading advertising news to their friends.

You may be thinking to yourself “what exactly defines an influential social media teen?” Well those adolescents are the top 15% most active and engaged group in the myYearbook community. The study showed that 97% of influential social media teens spend over two hours a day on social media sites, compared to 79% of other teens. While only 67% of other teens update their statuses at least once a day, 95% of social media teens update it daily. 91% have more than 500 friends in their social networks, 61% of other teens only have similar numbers. Digital activities are not only constricted to the Internet, teens’ cell phones also take part in social networking. 88% of influential teens send more than 3,000 texts a month, versus the other 63%. And over 61% have organized a special social event or Web/fan page for friends, battling the small other 19%.

And if you think that all these teens do is surf the web then you’re mistaken. Not only are they active online, they are also influential offline. They are 40% more likely than their peers to have attended a party during the previous weekend, and 20% more likely to have had a friend over their homes in the past week.
While these teens are networking and socializing, they are also spreading the word about the products and services they enjoy. The myYearbook study showed that 87% of these teens say that they share information about the products they use with their friends, compared with 50% of other teens. Influential teens also shared that they preferred clear and concise messages, as opposed to the funny and shocking preferences of other teens.
